Used on Cover of Arrow, 39-2, 2023. Caption is as follows: Class K1 No. 114 is leading this excursion train at Bluefield, W. Va., on September 2, 1957. This trip was part of the National Railway Historical Society???s National Convention on Labor Day weekend. This convention was set in Roanoke to be a true grand finale of American steam, and indeed it was. This 14-car train had come from Roanoke behind Class A, No. 1239. The 114 and a rider coach were put on at Bluefield and proceeded over the mainline to the Pocahontas Branch, and back to Pocahontas for the riders to visit the Pocahontas Exhibition Mine, then back with a trip over the Bluestone Branch to Matoka, were a single Virginian EL-C hauled the train back to Roanoke. |
