Libraries & Museums

The Virginia Museum of Transporation, Inc. has a substantial collection of N&W and VGN artifacts and information.

 
The Library of Congress (LOC) has a wide-ranging and fascinating online collection of photographs, found under its American Memory project. Some of these are railroad related. There is also a map database which contains many fascinating images.

Virginia Polytechnic Intstitue (Virginia Tech) has several web sites of interest. Their Digital Image Collection contains a number of selections from the N&W Historical Photograph Collection. Their Library's Special Collections Department has stewardship of the pre-1930 archival records of the N&W and predecessor roads, and maintains an online index of this significant manuscript collection. Lastly, the library's ImageBase project does contain some miscellaneous N&W and VGN images.

The Carrier Library at James Madison University has an extensive (and indexed) collection of company records pertaining to the Chesapeake Western Railway Company. The online summary page also gives a brief history of the line. The Chesapeake Western was merged into the N&W in 1954. [Link repaired 11-Sep-00]

 
The National Railway Historical Society has over 170 active local chapters that are dedicated to preserving, sharing, and enjoying the past, present and future of our country's railroading heritage. The Roanoke Chapter is located in Roanoke, Virginia and the Blue Ridge Chapter is located in Lynchburg, Virginia.

 
The National Model Railroad Association is the largest organization devoted to the development, promotion, and enjoyment of the hobby of model railroading. Their web pages will tell you more about the NMRA: the benefits of membership for those interested in the model railroading hobby, how the NMRA is organized, where and when upcoming conventions will be held, and how you can use the NMRA to further your enjoyment of model railroading. They also have a LARGE searchable listing of other railroad-oriented web sites, including some relating to the N&W and Virginian.

The Society now has an N&W railcar ("speeder") in its collection. The National Association of Rail Car Operators is dedicated to the preservation and legal operation of these MOW vehicles.

Publications

Kalmbach Publishing maintains rail-related web sites for its Model Railroader and Trains magazines. Kalmbach also hosts the highly useful Model Train Magazine Index.

White River Productions publishes a number of railroad historical magazines including our own Arrow as well as Passenger Train Journal and Railroads Illustrated.
