The Norfolk and Western Historical Society is a non-profit corporation, organized in 1984. Our mission is to preserve the history and memory of the Norfolk and Western and Virginian Railroads. We share information, historical data, and archival knowledge with our membership, now over 1000 strong from over 40 states and several foreign countries.

The N&W has a long and colorful history. As the last Class 1 railroad in the United States to operate steam power in regular service, the N&W has been a favorite of railfans and historians alike. The 1982 merger into the Norfolk Southern Corporation brought changes on the railroad as well as throughout the industry. This rapid loss of evidence of the original railroads has made our goal, the preservation of N&W and Virginian history, more important with each passing year. As a Society member, you'll receive our COLOR quarterly publication The Arrow, filled with historical data, stories and photographs detailing the history of the N&W and Virginian Railroads.

Our "COMMISSARY" Offers Books, Videos & MORE at Special Member Prices!

We search everywhere to find anything about the N&W and Virginian and offer them to members at specially discounted prices. With each issue of The Arrow, you'll receive a catalogue of everything we currently offer; it's a treasure trove of material produced exclusively by and for the N&WHS, as well as dozens of items from other sources. The special Society-produced items include:

• Our Annual Calendars: Each year we publish 2 calendars: our All-Color Calendar and our black-and-white Classic Calendar. Both calendars feature previously unpublished photos printed edge-to-edge, in an attractive 12" x 9" format, making them suitable for framing! Important date-block info is included too.
• Books, Brochures & Models: The Society is actively engaged in not only re-printing original books and brochures from the railroads, but our own original works as well. We also work with the modeling industry to develop products unique to the N&W and Virginian.

Members are invited to join us for our annual convention, held each summer in an original N&W on-line city. You'll get the opportunity to tour railroad facilities, compete in modeling and photo contests, plus enjoy the fellowship and comraderie of N&W and Virginian fans from all over the world.

Your Membership Helps the N&WHS Archives Preserve History! Thanks to the support of our members and others, our archives facility in Roanoke, VA continues to grow. The long-term goal of the Society is to preserve historical records, data, drawings, and other materials that would otherwise be lost forever. We frequently publish materials from the archives and make it available to our members. You can browse the computerized index to our Archives on-line through our web site. Your membership can help our continued success in preserving and sharing these priceless documents!
