The Norfolk and Western Historical Society is a non-profit corporation, organized in 1984. Our mission is to preserve the history and memory of the Norfolk and Western and Virginian Railroads. We share information, historical data, and archival knowledge with our membership, now over 1000 strong from over 40 states and several foreign countries.

The N&W has a long and colorful history. As the last Class 1 railroad in the United States to operate steam power in regular service, the N&W has been a favorite of railfans and historians alike. The 1982 merger into the Norfolk Southern Corporation brought changes on the railroad as well as throughout the industry. This rapid loss of evidence of the original railroads has made our goal, the preservation of N&W and Virginian history, more important with each passing year. Join us as we continue this important mission!
